RightWords Writing Guides

RightWords is more useful when examples are connected to principles. This reference library explains how to choose, adapt and write messages across occasions, relationships, tones and formats.

Start with the writing problem

If you already know the occasion but not the wording, begin with the guide closest to the decision you are making: how personal to be, how formal to sound, how long the message should be, how to open or close it, or how to handle a sensitive situation.

Use occasion guides for context

Birthday, sympathy, wedding, gratitude, professional, invitation and congratulations guides explain what changes when the occasion changes. They are designed to support the more specific example collections across RightWords rather than replace them.

Use craft guides to improve any draft

The tone, relationship, personalization, opening-and-closing and short-versus-long guides apply across many occasions. They help you turn a usable example into wording that fits the actual person and situation.

Examples are starting points

RightWords does not assume that a ready-made sentence can capture every relationship. The goal of this library is to give you enough structure to make a confident choice, then enough flexibility to make the final wording your own.
